Más allá de la parodia
Noches largas, vida corta, me
decían por ahí. Y ahora que me ven de viejo me piden consejo a mí, declama
el treintañero Dema en su Cabaret y Milonga. Con dicción imprecisa y la
camisa mal abotonada que su cuerpo flaco no logra mantener dentro del pantalón,
Sebastián Demattei —según figura en su documento— se calza el personaje de
cantor quebrado para subir al escenario a presentar su disco Dema y su
Orquesta Petitera, volumen 1 , con dos guitarristas que lo acompañan con más
pasión que erudición.
Dema, tu parada en el escenario, tu manera de
cantar apuntan a mostrar tus límites antes que tus virtudes como cantante.
Es como dice el Maestro —Marcelo Virgilio, guitarrista—, yo soy un gran
intérprete.
¿Buscás el tono paródico?
No, trato de
cuidarme de no caer en eso. El personaje que está arriba del escenario es el
mismo que está hablando con vos o comiendo un asado.
Una música que
suena antigua y áspera con letras que recurren al vocabulario lunfardo para
hablar de cuestiones más actuales; puede emparentarse con cierto rock que parece
hacer alarde de sus modos rudimentarios.
Alfredo Seoane : Queremos
que nuestra música tenga la fuerza de una orquesta pero sólo somos dos guitarras
y un cantor, no queremos que suene áspera, aunque tal vez sea eso lo que se
escucha. Nuestra propuesta está basada en la composición; no somos grandes
instrumentistas. Los grupos que se escuchan están más especializados en cada
instrumento.
Los tangueros suelen hablar de la fuerza del estilo a
través de la palabra mugre, ¿es ésa la búsqueda del grupo?
Dema:
Puede ser: después de cada show salimos enchastrados.
¿Por qué
escribís tango hoy?
Dema: Antes tocaba la trompeta y ahora que tengo
una hija dejé de tocar. Sé más de jazz que de tango. Siempre me gustó escribir y
tengo muchas cosas guardadas, desde poesías hasta guiones de películas. Escuché
y escucho tango y un día empezaron a salir letras que almacené en un
grabadorcito; se las mostré al Maestro y les puso música.

vos tenías un grupo de rock, ¿qué te llevó al tango?
Marcelo
Virgilio: Nunca había escuchado tango hasta que oí las letras que Dema había
grabado. Sonaban a tango. Desde ese momento empecé a tomarle el gusto al género:
primero fue Goyeneche y ahora sólo escucho tango. El Tío (Seoane) sí, siempre
arregló música para orquestas.
¿Eran tan ficticias como ésta?
Alfredo Seoane: Tuve orquestas de diferentes tipos. Escribo música
para teatro y escucho mucha música clásica porque me gusta el sonido sinfónico.
Dema: Hace muchos años, él y yo tocábamos jazz en un bar. Yo tocaba la
trompeta y él la guitarra. Queríamos hacer jazz pero lo que sonaba, para mí, era
tango. Lamentablemente no quedaron grabaciones de esa época, que si no Iaies
temblaría: esos registros demostrarían que nosotros fuimos los primeros en
probar esa mezcla.
